2022 Ice driving dates:

🔴 Group 1: Friday 4th February > Monday 7th February

🟡 Group 2: Monday 7th February > Thursday 10th February

🟡 Group 3: Friday 11th February > Monday 14th February

We have been visiting the same lake and offering our Ice Driving package since 2009 meaning we have mastered all the elements to make your trip a memorable one.

From the minute you make your decision to book with us, we book and arrange absolutely everything to make your trip as special as it can be including flights, transfers, hotels, cars on the lake and even your meals.

Upon arrival at Oslo Gardermoen, you will be met by your very own Tour Managers who will then drive you to the Kjølen hotel and proceed to look after you throughout your trip.

At the lake, you are handed the keys to a selection of cars enabling you to show off your skills before perfecting your technique with the complimentary tuition on both days on the lake.

You will be given the opportunity to drive front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive cars allowing you to have a lot of fun but also to master the skill of controlling an array of cars at speed on the ice.

The top layer of snow and ice is brushed and carved daily to produce two large circuits, a slalom area and doughnut circuits to perfect car control in the most breathtaking environment.

Please note, if you would prefer to fly from alternative airports please let us know and we would be pleased to arrange it for you.

The Driving

Ice driving is open to all drivers of all abilities. There are no expectations or requirements for previous levels of driving and staff are on hand at all times to offer support, advice and tuition on demand. You can expect to spin many times and probably require digging out (or even being towed out) of snow-banks, but that’s okay, it’s all part of the fun and learning!

Before jumping into the cars, there is a short but informative driver briefing on the first day. The purpose of this briefing is to prepare you for your two days of driving with an understanding of the handling characteristics you’re most likely to encounter. Your Tour Managers will then arrange for all drivers to drive all cars on each day with 30-minute car rotations before swapping to the next car. You will be behind the wheel of the cars at your own devices for an average of 4- 5 hours per day!

We stop for a coffee break mid-morning and a lunch break on both days allowing the opportunity to ask the staff for advice or compare techniques with your fellow drivers.

The cars are intentionally variable in size, weight and drive train (front, rear or four-wheel drive). You can expect to drive BMW 3 Series’, Z4s and 1 Series’ plus Suzuki Swifts and Subaru Imprezas.

You will often find that the same models of cars are fitted with varying standards of tyres, from mid-range winter tyres, through to top-of-the-range studded ice and snow tyres granting fantastic levels of grip. Each car will offer different handling characteristics that will naturally teach you about under-steer, over-steer, throttle control and braking on extremely variable surfaces.

We can assure you that you will end your experience a better driver with a more comprehensive understanding of car control but above all, you are pretty much guaranteed to go home with a huge smile on your face.

Ice Driving is possibly the most fun you can have on four wheels!

Common Questions:

We drive on a lake??
Yes, we do. The lake we use is called Södra Lötsjön which is in the region of Darlana in Sweden and has been used for Ice Driving in the winter months since the 1960s when it was an official testing facility for Volvo. The lake has a maximum depth of just 12 metres making it perfect for a consistent frozen surface.

Who is Ice Driving for?
Ice driving is open for everyone that wants to try it. There is absolutely no pre-requisite for any advanced driving ability or previous experience to partake. Ice driving is often used as a pre-season activity for racing drivers as it offers the perfect skill sharpening training for car control. Once you’ve mastered driving on ice, you can pretty much master driving on any surface. We can guarantee that regardless of your existing driving ability, you will go home from this experience as a better driver.

How cold will it be?
Typically on the lake temperatures are around -10c, however, this can be very changeable. The coldest we’ve experienced is close to -30c and some days we’ve seen temperatures of +3c. We offer plenty of advice on what to pack for the trip well ahead of time. It’s worth noting that due to extremely low humidity (moisture in the air) even at it’s coldest temperatures, the environment is surprisingly pleasant.

Can I do this on my own?
Yes, you can. We do welcome single drivers, however, as our trips are priced on the basis of two people sharing a hotel room, there will be an additional supplement to pay if you’re taking a room on your own (to make up for that missing additional person). On the lake, you will be paired up with another single driver but we’ll do our best to make sure you’re well-matched and we’ll give you a good chance to get to know each other first.
