CGT Welsh Driving Tour

An all-new Road Trip for 2020 designed with driving in mind.

We have researched, driven and re-driven what we think are some of the best roads in Wales and have included some firm favourites and a few hidden gems too.

On each evening of our trip, we will stay at a different hotel and enjoy a meal together with wine. For lunch, we will offer a few recommendations but ultimately will leave you to it allowing you to enjoy the drive and stop at your preferred pace each day.

Road trippers on the Welsh Springtime Run can expect luxurious hotels, mountainous backdrops and stunning roads - whatever the weather*! This road trip is subject to limited numbers so early booking is encouraged to avoid disappointment.

*It is Wales after all.

Welsh Road Trip

THE ITINERARY

Wednesday 22nd April | Evening/Afternoon - Gathering at The Vale Resort, Cardiff
Our road trip starts with a collective meeting at The Vale Resort Hotel north of Cardiff, located just off the M4 motorway. We will have a welcome drink in the hotel bar before dining together for the first time as a group. This is the perfect opportunity to meet, to ‘talk cars’ and to enjoy a few drinks too.

Welsh Driving Tour

Day 1 - Thursday 23rd April | Cardiff to Welshpool via The Brecon Beacons & Elan Valley
Today we drive some of our favourite passes through the Brecon Beacons including the breathtaking A4069. This stretch of road is often used as a proving ground by some of the UK’s most influential motoring journalists and has been featured on countless review videos and television shows over the years. We will break for a suggested lunch stop in the town of Llandovery at the end of the A4069.

The afternoon’s drive is one for the photographers as we’ll be continuing north and onto the stunning area known as Elan Valley near to Rhayader. We will drive a loop of Elan passing by and over Victorian built water dams, stopping for a couple of magical photo opportunities. Following our loop of Elan, we will drive to the small town of Welshpool where we will be checking into our hotel for the night in time for dinner.

Day 2 - Friday 24th April | Welshpool to Angelsey via Snowdonia National Park
Today we head away from the Brecons and towards mount Snowdon with the opportunity to get some pretty incredible views. Our drive takes us through valleys and along passes which are rarely used as direct commuter and travel routes meaning the roads are generally quiet and enjoyable. We will pass 3 stunning lakes ideal for a few more photo opportunities before arriving in the town of Llanberis which sits at the foot of Wales’ highest mountain. Here, there is the option if desired to board the Snowdon Mountain Railway, which during April, will climb to the 3/4 mark of the mountain for a great view of the national park before then returning to Llanberis and continuing our drive to Angelsey.

The second half of the drive to Angelsey is just 22 miles allowing time for an early arrival into our luxurious spa hotel on the island. This evening we will dine together once again. Use of the spa and the evening meal is included in your stay.

Day 3 -Saturday 25th April | Angelsey to Llangoed Hall Boughrood via the Mach Loop
Today we leave Angelsey with a list of our favourite roads to drive as we make our way south along the west coast before cutting back in towards the heart of Wales via the legendary Mach loop. The Mach Loop is an area of valleys in west-central Wales, famous for their use as low-level training areas for fast jet and propeller-driven aircraft. Whilst we can’t guarantee we’ll spot any aircraft on our drive, the views from the A470 more than make up for it. Our suggested lunch break will be in the town of Machynlleth.

Welsh Coast

After lunch, we continue to carve our way through the valleys as we head to our third and final overnight stop; the beautiful Llangoed Hall near to the village of Boughrood. Here we will enjoy our final evening meal together once again included in your stay.

Day 4 - Sunday 26th April | ‘The Big Zig-Zag & Sunday Roast!’

Today is our final day of driving so we are destined to make the most of it in the morning. We’re heading back into the Brecons and zigzagging our way back and forth through some of the most dramatic roads in the region before settling for a sumptuous Sunday Lunch Pub Roast - included in your trip. We’ll aim to gather for lunch in the early afternoon allowing us time to regale on our few days of driving together.

Following lunch, it’s time for the hugs and handshakes as we all scramble and head home, or, back into the Brecons if you prefer...
