Itinerary

Sailing from Portsmouth to Santander on a luxury overnight cruise ferry you will follow the amazing roads along the Asturian coast of Northern Spain before heading down into Portugal.
With stunning scenery all the way, you will drive corkscrew roads up into the mountains and sweep along wide open roads through vineyards and olive groves. In Spain, you will be staying at Paradors, magnificent historic buildings that used to be monasteries or castles which are now luxury hotels. The drive out of Portugal along the Douro valley and back into Spain offers some of the most beautiful vistas we have ever seen.

 

FRIDAY 7TH SEPTEMBER | Sailing 
Our tour begins with a cruise from Portsmouth to Santander on the Brittany Ferries ship, Cap Finistere. This ship has a swimming pool and spa area, a cinema and a promenade for pleasant deck stroll. On a calm day, you are almost guaranteed to see a whale or dolphin as you cross the Bay of Biscay. You will also find an a la carte restaurant, cafes and bars allowing you to relax and enjoy as you head to Spain.

SATURDAY 8TH SEPTEMBER | Driving Day - Santander to Soto Del Barco - 2 hours / 113 miles
After arriving into Santander (early evening) we will enjoy an easy drive along the Asturian coastline, the first night in Spain will be at a former palace at the highest point of the Soto del Barco. It has a backdrop of the entire estuary of the river Nalón giving the perfect photo opportunity. After a cocktail reception this evening, you will savour a typically Spanish dinner.

SUNDAY 9TH SEPTEMBER | Driving Day - Soto Del Barco to Leon - 3 hours / 110 miles
After breakfast, you will follow a scenic route south to the capital of the Province of León. The city of León is home to many churches and cathedrals noted for their architecture and art. Among them is the Gothic 13th-century Catedral de Léon, with its towers and flying buttresses and the Romanesque 10th-century Basílica de San Isidoro known for its frescoes and royal tombs. The city has narrow streets to explore and beautiful parks to wander through. Dinner will be at the hotel stunning Real Colegiata Hotel this evening.

MONDAY 10TH SEPTEMBER | Driving Day - Leon to Douro Valley - 4 hours / 225 miles
Today brings you a wonderful drive with contrasting scenery and roads as you cross from Spain into Portugal - you will corkscrew up into the mountains with spectacular views and then sweep through vineyards and olive groves. The last leg of the journey takes you through the pine forests of the National Parco de Pinhoa. Our hotel, nestled in the centre of the Douro valley, is a beautiful working vineyard in a breathtaking setting with views of the river.

TUESDAY 11TH SEPTEMBER | Rest Day in Douro Valley 
Today is a free day to relax in the sun on the terraces overlooking the river or to explore the very pretty local towns. This evening you will visit a truly beautiful local vineyard for a tour and tastings of their table wines and ports. If the harvest is underway you may be invited to help as this is one of the rare vineyards where the grapes are still pressed by foot. Supper is a sumptuous banquet of local delicacies which you could take in a picnic basket for an al fresco dining experience into their lovely garden or find a shady spot in the vineyard.

WEDNESDAY 12TH SEPTEMBER | Driving Day - Douro Valley to Zamora - 3 hours / 145 miles
This morning you may enjoy breakfast at a table on the terrace overlooking the river before you head off for an exciting drive back into Spain. The drive up and out of the Douro valley is one of the amazing we have ever driven – the views are unrivalled and the roads so good we are sure you will feel the same exhilaration. You should arrive in Zamora in time to explore the old quarter of the city and relax on the hotel‘s sun terrace, with views across the rooftops, before dinner in the hotel. This Parador was built on the site of an old citadel and is filled with historic riches and artistic tapestries.

THURSDAY 13TH SEPTEMBER | Zamora to Picos de Europa Mountains - 4 hours / 180 miles
A most scenic drive takes you north into the Picos de Europa Mountains for two nights. The route is through national parks before entering the mountain region and the approach to the Parador de Fuente Dé a series of long dramatic canyons and gorges with rock faces that rise vertically above you. This typical mountain region hotel is at the base of the cableway that climbs up to the Áliva viewpoint and has breathtaking views from every window.

FRIDAY 14TH SEPTEMBER | Rest Day in Zamora
Today is a free day offering a choice of many different activities from trail walking to exploring the bustling town of Potes and the local churches and museums. There is a local vineyard where you can enjoy a tour and tastings, or, you can take the cable car to marvel at the astounding views. This evening there will be a cocktail reception at the hotel before your last dinner in Spain.

SATURDAY 15TH SEPTEMBER | Driving Day - Zamora to Santander - 2 hours / 80 miles
This morning we have time for a leisurely breakfast allowing the whole day to make your way back to Santander. There are several route options taking you along the coastline offering the
opportunity to have coffee and lunch at one of the scenic seaside towns. Alternatively, you can head straight into Santander, the elegant capital city of the Cantabria region. The city is stretched across a wide bay with sandy beaches. Your departure from Santander will take place

SUNDAY 16TH SEPTEMBER | Sailing
After a relaxing cruise making the most of the ships leisure facilities, you will arrive back in Portsmouth at 19:45hrs.
